Snowy Owls enjoy the privilege of being high on the predator/prey list. This however, doesn’t deter other species from harassing them.

This Snowy was trying to nap, when a Crow happened along, and began harassing it. After several moments of screaming at the Crow, the Owl moved off to a more peaceful roost.

Snow Gets In Your Eyes

Snow Gets In Your Eyes

Atop his perch, this mature male Snowy Owl winters a blustery winter storm.

Despite this weather, he patiently sat watching, waiting, vigilant in his search for food. Snowy Owls mainly live on small rodents during the winter months. They have been known to supplement their diet with rabbits, birds and fish.

It’s of the utmost importance to leave the Owls undisturbed so they are able to find food.

Imagine living in subzero temperatures, howling wind and blowing snow and unable to hunt because people are distracting or spooking you. Imagine living in those conditions on an empty stomach.

While Snowy Owls’ preference for roosting on utility poles can be a frustration to those wanting their photo on a more natural perch, I’ve come to the conclusion that, from their perspective, these are the best places from which to hunt.

So, I now wish them luck and continue on, looking for another opportunity.

This young male perched on a rather intricate, interesting hydro pole, so I decided to capture his image.

Sadly, some owls lose their life through electrocution on these poles.

Often I find Snowy Owls hunkered down on the lee side of a berm, escaping strong wind and blowing snow.
